Thomas church landscape designer, in which I took the time to study the history of the man and his works. The book is full of maps and prints of his designs, and it’s full of architectural and architectural drawings and photographs. All very useful!
The “St. Paul’s” article that I wrote about the church was published in the “Herald &, Review” on August 19, 2004.
It was during this process that I started to notice the similarity between the church and the St. Mary of the Lake church in Chicago. Then I learned that both churches are related, and in fact designed by the same man.
The church was built in 1884, and for a number of years served as an Episcopal church.
In 1994 the congregation of St. Paul’s asked for a Lutheran congregation to worship in their church, and when that congregation did not materialize, they were granted use of the Episcopal church for five years.
When they asked for an extension, the Chicago Historical Society told them to make arrangements for the preservation of the Episcopal church.
They found one other congregation that was interested in the church, and on August 9, 2003 they held a re-dedication service to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the church’s founding.
The new congregation is the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod.
Since 1995 the pastor of St. Paul’s has been Rev. Gary H. Gossmann, pastor of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod.
The re-dedication service was attended by several hundred people from the local Lutheran community, and an Episcopal priest from Milwaukee.
The congregation is in the process of preparing to move into their new church.
For the Lutheran service a traditional Lutheran service was held, with a choir, pastor, liturgy and the traditional Lutheran colors of purple, white, green, and gold.
Rev. Gary Gossmann and a group of congregants from St. Paul’s also helped paint the new church.
The building was formally opened for worship on Sunday, October 25.
When the church was built in 1889, it was the largest Lutheran church in the state of Illinois.
In 2005 the church was given to the city and will become a historic site.
The Chicago Department of Historic Preservation is the curator of the historic church.

I had heard that the St. Paul’s Church was the only surviving church from the Chicago’s first Protestant German settlement. It was built in 1889, and was the largest Lutheran church in Illinois when it was built. It was built on land donated by Mary Riehle, the widow of the first Protestant settler. Mary’s husband, Charles Riehle, was a native of Ober-Schocherwald. She was the first female Lutheran Minister in the state of Illinois and the first to be ordained by the American College for Evangelical Lutheran Women. She was the founder of the first Lutheran Sunday School for the City of Chicago, the Riehle School. She lived on the block adjacent to the church when it was built, and her name was on the original deed. After her death, her nephew and niece inherited the lot.
Just found this comment. It is fascinating, particularly her having been the first female Lutheran minister in the State of Illinois and the first to be ordained by the College for Evangelical Lutheran Women. It is also interesting to note that she was a graduate of the University of Halle, in Germany. This was where Luther and his wife held many of the key services of the church that he founded.
St. Paul’s Lutheran Church is the only remaining Lutheran Church built in Chicago, IL that is of German construction. For many years the parish was housed in the old German Reformed Church building. In 1991, the parish bought an old mansion on the southeast corner of Wells and Southport. In 1999, the Lutheran Synod of the Central Illinois conference held its third Annual Meeting at the church. The parish’s main hall, once a gymnasium, seats about 300. It has been designated an Illinois Landmark.
What you might be able to do is to request a copy of the historical commission report and make your comments known to the commission. If you can’t do that then your chance of seeing the church altered has fallen to nil.
In my day, we did not expect to see changes made to churches that had been built on donated ground in a settlement. It was accepted that a donation would ensure preservation. However, that’s not what we’ve been seeing lately. There is an element of greed that has crept into the process. This greed has no place in a process that should be built on trust.Vjerujem da ćete paziti da čuvate i očuvate luteransku crkvu sv. Pavla.
Tražite javni komentar. Ja, kao član javnosti, prihvatam vašu ponudu i dajem svoje komentare.
1. Ovo je privatna crkva. To NIJE javna zgrada jer je privatno vlasništvo.
