What are hummingbirds?
Hummingbirds are a group of about 80 North American bird species. They have very small bills and long, slender, down-curved wings that flap in the breeze.
Their flight is fast and agile, with quick short wing beats and a jerky up and down motion. The beak is short and curved.
The hummingbird's plumage has metallic and iridescent blue or greenish colors on top. These are the colors we see when hummingbirds look up. The bright colors are the result of tiny scales on their plumage which catch and reflect light. There are two exceptions to this: Some hummers have red in their throat or chest and some have a green belly, yellow legs, and a white tail.
Each hummingbird species has its own bill shape. Their beaks have tiny hooks to pick insects up, and their tongues are long and sticky to entrap small insects and flies. The bills of two species (both in the genus Selasphorus) look very different. The yellow-billed hummingbird's bill is more slender, while the orange-billed hummingbird's bill is much thicker and round. All the species have black legs.
Where do hummingbirds live?
Hummingbirds are found in North and South America, but only in the West Indies in the form of the Bahama Hummingbird. Some species live in Central America, but the majority of species are restricted to the Americas south of Mexico.
Some hummingbird species live in rain forests, others live in deserts and other dry environments. They visit many flowers, some for their nectar and others to help pollinate the flowers.
How long have hummingbirds lived on Earth?
Hummingbirds are one of the most primitive bird groups, but they have been around for about 75 million years, based on an analysis of DNA. The oldest species is the Bahama Hummingbird, which lived around 80 million years ago.
How many species of hummingbirds are there?
There are 1,100 recognized species of hummingbirds, with more species waiting to be described. Some scientists believe that there may be between 2,000 and 5,000 species of hummingbirds, although many have not been described yet.
How are hummingbirds named?
Hummingbirds are named after birds that belong to the family of birds called Apodidae. The scientific name is Apoda, and the genus name is Trochilus.
There are 1,100 species of hummingbirds recognized by scientists today, all within the genus Trochilus.
Does a species of hummingbird have a common name?
Yes, and the common names are the same as the scientific names. For example, the two species of the genus Selasphorus are called Costa's and rufous hummingbirds.

Hummingbird names and taxonomy were covered in the post How to name a bird?
I know you have other posts about bird calls, songs, calls of birds. Do you have a post on bird names? I have no interest in bird song. I like the colors of birds in the evening, the way they move, and their calls.
Thanks for dropping by, and welcome to the bird blog! The bird name question was addressed in my posts about birds and bird calls. The hummingbirds section included both Costa's Hummingbird and rufous hummingbird. The post How to name a bird? includes an extensive discussion of the names of birds, and the taxonomy of bird species is explained in my post The birds, the sounds they make, and how to learn their songs, calls, and songs. I've also written about the colors of birds in the evening, and the post includes a list of birds that sing at dusk and those that remain quiet during that time.
My post The birds and the sound they make covers the song songs of birds, along with other bird sounds. There are bird songs in the winter. How can you tell what time of the year the birds are singing?
